Predictions for the Last Week of the USL-Pro Season

There are 9 games in this final weekend of regular season action in the USL-Pro.  Almost all of these matches have implications on how the final standings shake out (all except Dayton at Orlando).

Wilmington at Charlotte, 2-2
Richmond at Antigua, 2-0
Harrisburg at L.A., 1-0
Dayton at Orlando, 0-4

Pittsburgh at Rochester, 0-3
Dayton at Charleston, 0-2
Charlotte at Wilmington, 1-2

Richmond at Antigua, 2-1
Harrisburg at L.A., 2-3

Rochester can still grab second place but only if Richmond doesn’t win both of its games in Antigua.  The 4-0 scoreline of their defeat at home to Charleston hurt the Rhinos’ goal differential enough to make a victory against Pittsburgh not good enough for Rochester.  The silver lining for Rochester is that Antigua tends to improve in the second game of a 2 games in 3 nights stand at home this season (3 out of 4 times).  Here’s to hoping that Antigua can fire a few home against Richmond.

Dayton probably won’t win either remaining on the road, giving three points to Charleston.  A home and home series between Wilmington and Charlotte will be tipped in the Hammerheads favor by the strong play of on-loan Corey Hertzog.

Harrisburg has strong players but I don’t like the team and I don’t want the Rhinos to face them in the playoffs.  Los Angeles has to win their two remaining games to take a spot in the playoffs, which I think is unlikely given the circus nature of the team out west.

I hope the Blues can manage to pull off both victories and dump Harrisburg out of the playoffs, but I might have to use all my wishes on Antigua taking a point away from visiting Richmond.

Rochester: currently has 38 points (and plus 3 goal differential)
vs Pittsburgh – win
= would end the season with 41 points (and plus 6 goal differential) Continue reading

Predictions for the Final Two Weeks of USL-Pro Season

I was curious as to what the final standings might look like come the end of the season.  It can be difficult to tell based on today’s standings because each team has anywhere from one to four games remaining and because 4 teams are within 2 points of each other.

I took the liberty of filling in the rest of the playoff contenders’ schedules with the results I think with occur.  Feel free to disagree with me and tell me in the comment section which games you would change.

Rochester: currently has 38 points

The USL-Pro Playoff Race; Two Weeks Left

If the 2012 USL-Pro Playoffs started today, the six participating teams would be Orlando, Rochester, Charleston, Wilmington, Richmond, and Harrisburg.  However, because each of these teams has between one and four games remaining in the regular season, mathematically only Orlando is safe at this point.  Any of Rochester, Charleston, Wilmington, Richmond or Harrisburg could find themselves on the outside come playoff time.  Here is a team by team description of the rest of the season for each team and what they need to do to secure postseason soccer in 2012.

Orlando City sealed up home field advantage for their postseason adventure a few weeks ago by clinching the number one position in the 2012 USL-Pro regular season table.  Even though their match at home against Dayton Dutch Lions is largely an exhibition, head coach Adrian Heath won’t let Orlando City take a night off.

Rochester Rhinos look like a safe bet to claim the number two spot and the first round playoff bye that comes with it.  The Rhinos are sitting on 38 points with two matches remaining in the regular season, at home against Charleston and Pittsburgh.  Two wins at home would put Rochester at 44 points on the season and secure a second placed finish.  If the Rhinos can defeat Charleston this Saturday August 11, they will ensure a higher finish than the Battery.  Due to the unbalanced nature of the USL schedule, however, even if the Rhinos manage 3 points from their final two games, they are still susceptible to sixth placed Harrisburg and seventh placed Charlotte if those two teams win all of their four remaining games.

Charleston Battery have amassed 34 points from 21 games and can catch the Rhinos by grabbing four points from their two other games, at Harrisburg and home to Dayton, and by getting a result at Sahlen’s Stadium.  Despite being in second place, the Rhinos have not quite turned Sahlen’s into a fortress with a 5-3-2 record, so this task is not insurmountable.  If Charleston beat the Rhinos and get a win and tie in their other games, they will leapfrog Rochester into second place.

Wilmington Hammerheads have 4 wins, 3 ties, 1 loss in their last 8 games which include stealing a point on the road from each of Charleston and Orlando.  Buoyed by superstar loan signing Corey Hertzog (New York Red Bulls), the Hammerheads are tied for second most goals scored in the league and have not lost at home all season.  Wilmington has two matches against Charlotte left in their schedule, one home and one away.  The Charlotte Eagles will be fighting for a playoff spot, so those won’t be easy matches but mathematically Wilmington can still take second place out from under the noses of Rochester and Charleston if other results go their way.  Even if they don’t get the first round bye, look for Wilmington to storm into the postseason anyway.  The team has been playing well recently and will take that good form into the playoffs.

Richmond Kickers are not safe from falling out of the playoff picture, but likewise could still claim second place if they win their remaining three fixtures.  The Kickers host Harrisburg before flying to Antigua for two games in three nights against Barracuda FC.  Antigua is 3-7-0 at home, so Richmond have a realistic chance to leaving the Caribbean with six points but the Harrisburg match will be a much harder battle.  Two wins out of three games will give Richmond 6 more points to end the regular season on 38 points.  Though it is not certain yet, it is a safe bet that 38 points will be good enough for a spot in the 2012 USL-Pro playoffs.

Harrisburg City Islanders sit in the 6th and final playoff qualifying place.  They have collected 30 points from 20 games, which means that if they win their remaining four matches they could end the season on 42 points which may be good enough for second place.  The City Islanders host Charleston, and travel to Richmond before flying cross country to face the LA Blues twice in three nights.  Harrisburg has a strong 4-3-2 record on the road and will definitely put up a fight in order to ensure a run in the playoffs this season.

Charlotte Eagles are on the outside looking in at this point in the season despite being just one point back from Harrisburg with 29 from 20 games played.  The Eagles are in the same boat as Harrisburg meaning that if they can win their remaining matches (at Pittsburgh, at Dayton, at Wilmington, and a rescheduled match at home against Wilmington) they can finish the season as a high seed for the playoffs.  Charlotte knows they need to play the best soccer of their season and will play like a team on fire in their remaining games.

Los Angeles Blues finds themselves in 8th place after earning 26 points from 20 games.  The Blues play all their remaining matches at home in a couple of two games in three nights series.  Antigua comes to California to play on August 9 and 11 before Los Angeles hosts Harrisburg on August 17 and 19.  If they win 3 out of their 4 games left in the regular season, the Blues will jump safely into the playoff spots.  Antigua hasn’t won a game away from home all season, 0-9-1 on the road, so Los Angeles should be able to get 6 points from those two games.  It will be important for Harrisburg to finish the regular season in good form so those two matches will be much harder for the Blues.

Dayton Dutch Lions have been eliminated from the 2012 USL-Pro playoffs.  Dayton needs at least 11 points to take 8th place but there are only 9 points possible from their remaining three games.  Dayton fans should take solace knowing that in 21 games this season, the Dutch Lions have doubled their wins total and in their last few games have the chance to double their points haul from last year.  In 2013, Dayton will hope to continue their improving trajectory towards their first ever USL-Pro playoff appearance.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds are sitting on the outside at this point in the season.  The Riverhounds played some encouraging soccer at times this year and I hope the fanbase will swell upon completion of their new facilities in 2013.  Unfortunately the team has allowed 35 goals for a -15 goal differential at this point in the 2012 season.

Something we’ve known for a rather long time is that Antigua Barracuda FC will not be participating in the 2012 USL-Pro playoffs.  With only 3 wins from 20 games so far this season, the Caribbean team can not muster enough points from their remaining four games to make the 6 team cut.  But it’s not all doom and gloom down on the islands, as their membership in the league was part of a plan to increase the performance of the Antiguan-Barbudan national team.  As you may remember, the national side has made it to the Third Round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for the first time in history.  Even though the league results have not gone their way (due not in small part to travel and scheduling nightmares), don’t expect Antigua Barracuda FC to bow out of the USL-Pro.

Only four teams in USL-Pro know the result of their playoff hopes at this point in the season.  Antigua Barracuda FC, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and Dayton Dutch Lions are all eliminated from the playoffs while Orlando City has know for quite awhile that it has made the postseason.  All of the other seven teams in the league are fighting for the remaining 5 playoff spots.  Mathematically, any of these seven teams can finish in second place but I would look for Rochester or Charleston to wrap up the first round playoff bye.

The cliche is shockingly accurate in the case of the 2012 USL-Pro season; it’s all to play for…

Rhinos Host Orlando, Try to Secure Second Place

On Friday night, the Rochester Rhinos will have a lot of things swirling through their heads as they walk out against Orlando. Rochester has a 5 point lead on Charleston, but the Battery have played two fewer games. That means that if the Rhinos win they will make it nearly impossible for Charleston to catch up.  A win would also be revenge for the 4-0 massacre the Rhinos suffered last month in Orlando.  If the defense and Kristian Nicht can manage a shutout, it would rank Nicht in third place outright for most clean sheets in a single season for the Rhinos.  Head coach Jesse Myers will be doing what he can to keep his players’ heads clear and focused on the task at hand; performing as well as they have all season.

Looking at the schedule at the beginning of the season, I noticed that the team played its last five games at home and eight of its last ten.  This gave the Rhinos an opportunity to finish the season as strongly as they opened it (6-0-0).  The team is currently riding a four game win streak at home, and since a mid-season slump they have rallied for 17 points from a possible 27 for a record of 5-2-2.  Jesse Myers knows as well as anyone in the league that teams need to be enjoying positive form heading into the postseason.

Speaking of postseason, the Rhinos playoff picture depends on whether or not they can end the regular season in second place.  A second place finish would earn Rochester a first round playoff bye and the Rhinos’ main rival for that spot are the Charleston Battery.  Wilmington Hammerheads and Harrisburg City Islanders are both sitting on 30 points after 20 games and could factor as a threat for second place if they win out their remaining matches.  Charleston has two games against Wilmington and one against a surging Harrisburg before traveling up to Rochester Saturday the 11th. Two-Thirds Done, Rhinos Approaching the Home Stretch in 2012 USL-Pro Season

The Rochester (formerly Raging) Rhinos have now played 16 games out of their 24 game season.  For the mathematically challenged that means the campaign is now two-thirds over.  Currently, the team sits in third place behind Charleston in second and defending champions Orlando in first.  These are the same teams that occupied the top three spots after the first third of the season.

As I mentioned at the time, the Rhinos got their biggest travelling out of the way early by playing at Los Angeles their first two games of the season.  Rochester still has the easiest remaining schedule of the three teams with six of the last eight games at home, including the last five.  In that time Rochester hosts Pittsburgh twice, Dayton, and Los Angeles.  The team will face a difficult road trip playing fourth place Wilmington next Thursday (July 12) before traveling to the belly of the beast to play Orlando in the Citrus Bowl two days later on Saturday (July 14).  Rochester will then host second place Charleston and league-leading Orlando on consecutive weekends in August.

Sat July 7, Dayton at Rochester
Thu July 12, Rochester at Wilmington
Sat July 14, Rochester at Orlando
Sat July 21, Pittsburgh at Rochester
Fri July 27, Los Angeles at Rochester
Fri Aug 3, Orlando at Rochester
Sat Aug 11, Charleston at Rochester
Sat Aug 18, Pittsburgh at Rochester

Charleston have currently only played 14 games but are sitting pretty in second place with 30 points.  The Battery have to play Rochester once, Orlando twice, and fourth place Wilmington (now with electric Corey Hertzog) three times in their remaining 10 games.  They also have two sets of back-to-back games in different cities; July 6 and 7 and then August 3 and 4.

Fri July 6, Charlotte at Charleston
Sat July 7, Charleston at Charlotte
Sat July 14, Wilmington at Charleston
Thu July 19, Orlando at Charleston
Fri July 27, Charleston at Orlando
Fri Aug 3, Wilmington at Charleston
Sat Aug 4, Charleston at Wilmington
Wed Aug 8, Charleston at Harrisburg
Sat Aug 11, Charleston at Rochester
Sat Aug 18, Dayton at Charleston

Orlando have been at the top of the USL-Pro standings all season long and there is little to suggest anyone will knock them off their pedestal any time soon.  In the 9 games left in their regular season, the City Lions play Rochester twice, Charleston twice, and host Wilmington.  If Orlando can get at least 4 points from their farthest remaining road trip, 2 games in California, they may have all but locked up the first round playoff bye that comes with finishing in the top two places in the regular season standings.

Fri July 6, Orlando at LA
Sun July 8, Orlando at LA
Sat July 14, Rochester at Orlando
Thu July 19, Orlando at Charleston
Wed July 25, Wilmington at Orlando
Fri July 27, Charleston at Orlando
Wed Aug 1, Orlando at Harrisburg
Fri Aug 3, Orlando at Rochester
Fri Aug 17, Dayton at Orlando

Wilmington’s season will come down to the contributions of Corey Hertzog and third highest goal scorer in the league Andriy Budnyy.  The Hammerheads have to face Charleston three times (twice in Charleston) in addition to traveling to Orlando and hosting Rochester.  If Wilmington’s attackers can get out in front, they may be able to pip the Rhinos and Battery for that second automatic semifinal berth.

Sat July 7, Richmond at Wilmington
Thu July 12, Rochester at Wilmington
Sat July 14, Wilmington at Charleston
Fri July 20, Dayton at Wilmington
Sat July 21, Wilmington at Charlotte
Wed July 25, Wilmington at Orlando
Fri Aug 3, Wilmington at Charleston
Sat Aug 4, Charleston at Wilmington
Sat Aug 18, Charlotte at Wilmington

Rochester Rhinos v Dayton Dutch Lions Match Preview

Dayton Dutch Lions will travel to Sahlen’s Stadium to face off against the Rhinos for their last regular season meeting on Saturday.  In the time since these two teams last met on May 26, a 2-2- draw in Ohio, Rochester and Dayton have had identical records:2 wins, 3 losses, 2 ties.  Rochester needs this game to solidify their position at the top of the standings before a difficult road trip next week.  Dayton needs to steal a result in Rochester to gather momentum for a playoff push.

It may be inaccurate to call Dayton Dutch Lions a resurgent soccer club because, despite their abysmal record, they haven’t really been as down and out as many observers thought.  They’ve only lost 2 games by more than a one goal margin this season.  One could easily say that the team has been in every game this year and was only blown out once (4-0 loss away to Harrisburg).  They’ve recently beaten a strong Wilmington side 4-0 at home so Dayton could finally have righted the ship.

I asked “chadholl” who moderates the r/DDLFC and contributes to r/MLS about the players to watch and story lines about the team coming into Saturday’s match.

“The biggest thing that has changed since the Rhinos and Dutch Lions last met is that the Dutch Lions have gained some confidence.  We upset the Columbus Crew in route to a quarter-final appearance in the USOC.  We are 2-1-0 since the midpoint of the season.  There have been signs of individual talent all season, but now the team is learning how to play together as a team.  Chemistry is finally developing.

We’re getting much better distribution from midfield, especially from Joel DeLass.  Both forwards, Gibson Bardsley and Eli Garner, are real threats to score and aren’t shy about taking shots (Bardsley leads the league in this category).  Akeem Priestly, who has scored two goals in the last two matches, provides creativity off the bench.  The defense is anchored by Nixon Dias and Mettin Copier, two solid centerbacks from Holland.  Matt Williams is a stud in the net.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see him playing in a higher league in the near future.

The Dutch Lions will be looking to continue the run they’ve started in the second half of the season. Several of the players are talking about making the playoffs, but they’re going to need victories on the road against good teams to get there. Additionally, this is the final time that these teams will meet in the regular season this year, and Dayton will be looking to even the season series at 1-2-1. Rochester’s victory over Dayton on April 28 resulted from a goal on a questionable non-call from the referee. The draw on May 26 ended with a Rochester goal very late in injury time. The Lions will be hungry for a win at Sahlen’s Stadium.”

Despite a thorough defeat at the hands of Sporting Kansas City in the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal on June 26, Dayton may finally have found the winning combination on the field.  It may not appear much at face value, but Dayton’s victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday (while the Rhinos dismantled Antigua) lifted the Dutch Lions from the league’s basement and potentially within reach of the playoffs.

The Dutch Lions have trotted out mostly the same starting XI all season and have stayed true to their 4-3-3 philosophy.  Saturday’s lineup will look a lot like this:

GK: Matt Williams
D: Mettin Copier, Nixon Dias, Gregory Preciado, Shane Smith
M: Joel DeLass, Kyle Knotek, Mikael McNamara
F: Gibson Bardsley, Eli Garner, Gerrit Jan Bartels
Reserves: M Bret Jones, Eric Kissinger, Toric Robinson; D Lord Taylor; F Akeem Priestly, Daniel Holowaty; GK Corey Whisenhunt.

The following Dayton players have gotten on the scoresheet this season:
Thomas “Eli” Garner: 3 goals, 2 assists, 15 shots

Gibson Bardsley: 3 goals, 1 assist, 35 shots
Akeem Priestley: 2 goals, 15 shots
Mettin Copier: 2 goals
Joel DeLass: 1 goal, 1 assist
Gerrit Jan Bartels: 3 assists, tied for 5th in league
Eric Kissinger: 1 goal
Kyle Knotek, Mikael McNamara, Shane Smith: 1 assist each

For the Rhinos, you don’t get a much easier week than the bottom two teams in the league at home.  And that’s good news for the team because next week Rochester has to travel to both fourth placed Wilmington on Thursday and league leading Orlando on Saturday.  Wednesday night the Rhinos felt the relief of a big win in a fairly open game.  During halftime of their game against Pittsburgh, Dutch Lions head coach Ivar van Dinteren “told the guys to open up the game,” and that’s how they found success with their 4-3-3 formation.  If Dayton’s match mimics the back and forth nature from Wednesday, Rochester could get punished. Dayton’s forward three have shown dynamism in bursts this season and certainly will not be afraid to pepper shots on Kristian Nicht.  I can’t promise 4 goals from the home team, but the game should be thoroughly entertaining from two teams that can get numbers forward.

Rochester Rhinos v Antigua Barracuda FC Match Preview

Antigua Barracuda FC has a record of 3-9-0 and has only scored 8 goals while giving up 23 goals against in the meantime.  The team has yet to score a goal away from home, losing all four of their matches on the mainland U.S. by an average of 3-0.  ABFC just ended an 8 game losing streak by beating Charleston on the island this past Sunday 1-0 behind an early second half goal from Peter Byers.  Molvin James left this game after 8 minutes due to injury and was replaced by Keita DeCastro.

If the Rhinos (25 points from 15 games) fail to finish their chances against Antigua Barracuda FC on Wednesday night, they will leave themselves susceptible to getting leapfrogged by Wilmington (22 points from 15 games), Harrisburg (19 points from 13 games) and Los Angeles (17 points from 12 games).  Rochester needs to take advantage of home games so the team doesn’t see it’s tremendous 6-0-0 start go down the drain.

Looking Ahead for the Top Three Teams in USL-Pro

In the aftermath of the third round U.S. Open Cup disaster, let’s look ahead to the middle of the USL-Pro season so we can feel good again.  Oddly enough all three of the top teams in the league lost in their Tuesday night cup matches.  As of today, May 30, the current USL-Pro standings see Orlando in first, Rochester in second, and Charleston rounding out the top three.

At this point in the season Orlando and Rochester have each played 9 games and Charleston has played 7.  Of their matches, Orlando has only dropped 4 points (2 draws), the Rhinos have dropped 7 (2 draws, 1 loss), and Charleston have dropped 6 points (2 losses).  In the USL-Pro season each team plays 24 games, so the third round of the Open Cup comes about a third through the season.

So far this season, the Rhinos have played back to back games twice; first on May 11 and 12 in Charlotte and Charleston, and then on May 25 and 26 in Harrisburg and Dayton.  Between Friday May 18 and Tuesday May 29, the Rhinos played 5 matches.  The Rhinos also already flew to Los Angeles and don’t have to make the trip down to Antigua.  Fortunately Rochester doesn’t have anymore back-to-back games, but does have two occasions of playing a second game after only one full day of rest (Friday 15 June and Sunday 17 June, Thursday 12 July and Saturday 14 July). Rhinos Finish Preseason with a Win over Syracuse University

The Rhinos started with Kristian Nicht in goal, centerbacks Tyler Bellamy and George Kyriazis in front of him, Jack Traynor to the left and Mac Hemmi on the right.  Bellamy is returning for his third season with the Rhinos, while Nicht and Traynor are recent signings and Kyriazis and Hemmi are both on trial.

The midfield looked rather familiar as Drew Cost partnered Tyler Rosenlund in the middle, 2011 Rookie of the Year J.C. Banks started on the right with newly returned Danny Earls on the left wing.

Offseason acquisition Graciano Brito led the line up front with big signing Tam McManus playing behind the big man.

The match report and quotes come from the team’s online write-up. Continue reading
