The USL-Pro Playoff Race; Two Weeks Left

If the 2012 USL-Pro Playoffs started today, the six participating teams would be Orlando, Rochester, Charleston, Wilmington, Richmond, and Harrisburg.  However, because each of these teams has between one and four games remaining in the regular season, mathematically only Orlando is safe at this point.  Any of Rochester, Charleston, Wilmington, Richmond or Harrisburg could find themselves on the outside come playoff time.  Here is a team by team description of the rest of the season for each team and what they need to do to secure postseason soccer in 2012.

Orlando City sealed up home field advantage for their postseason adventure a few weeks ago by clinching the number one position in the 2012 USL-Pro regular season table.  Even though their match at home against Dayton Dutch Lions is largely an exhibition, head coach Adrian Heath won’t let Orlando City take a night off.

Rochester Rhinos look like a safe bet to claim the number two spot and the first round playoff bye that comes with it.  The Rhinos are sitting on 38 points with two matches remaining in the regular season, at home against Charleston and Pittsburgh.  Two wins at home would put Rochester at 44 points on the season and secure a second placed finish.  If the Rhinos can defeat Charleston this Saturday August 11, they will ensure a higher finish than the Battery.  Due to the unbalanced nature of the USL schedule, however, even if the Rhinos manage 3 points from their final two games, they are still susceptible to sixth placed Harrisburg and seventh placed Charlotte if those two teams win all of their four remaining games.

Charleston Battery have amassed 34 points from 21 games and can catch the Rhinos by grabbing four points from their two other games, at Harrisburg and home to Dayton, and by getting a result at Sahlen’s Stadium.  Despite being in second place, the Rhinos have not quite turned Sahlen’s into a fortress with a 5-3-2 record, so this task is not insurmountable.  If Charleston beat the Rhinos and get a win and tie in their other games, they will leapfrog Rochester into second place.

Wilmington Hammerheads have 4 wins, 3 ties, 1 loss in their last 8 games which include stealing a point on the road from each of Charleston and Orlando.  Buoyed by superstar loan signing Corey Hertzog (New York Red Bulls), the Hammerheads are tied for second most goals scored in the league and have not lost at home all season.  Wilmington has two matches against Charlotte left in their schedule, one home and one away.  The Charlotte Eagles will be fighting for a playoff spot, so those won’t be easy matches but mathematically Wilmington can still take second place out from under the noses of Rochester and Charleston if other results go their way.  Even if they don’t get the first round bye, look for Wilmington to storm into the postseason anyway.  The team has been playing well recently and will take that good form into the playoffs.

Richmond Kickers are not safe from falling out of the playoff picture, but likewise could still claim second place if they win their remaining three fixtures.  The Kickers host Harrisburg before flying to Antigua for two games in three nights against Barracuda FC.  Antigua is 3-7-0 at home, so Richmond have a realistic chance to leaving the Caribbean with six points but the Harrisburg match will be a much harder battle.  Two wins out of three games will give Richmond 6 more points to end the regular season on 38 points.  Though it is not certain yet, it is a safe bet that 38 points will be good enough for a spot in the 2012 USL-Pro playoffs.

Harrisburg City Islanders sit in the 6th and final playoff qualifying place.  They have collected 30 points from 20 games, which means that if they win their remaining four matches they could end the season on 42 points which may be good enough for second place.  The City Islanders host Charleston, and travel to Richmond before flying cross country to face the LA Blues twice in three nights.  Harrisburg has a strong 4-3-2 record on the road and will definitely put up a fight in order to ensure a run in the playoffs this season.

Charlotte Eagles are on the outside looking in at this point in the season despite being just one point back from Harrisburg with 29 from 20 games played.  The Eagles are in the same boat as Harrisburg meaning that if they can win their remaining matches (at Pittsburgh, at Dayton, at Wilmington, and a rescheduled match at home against Wilmington) they can finish the season as a high seed for the playoffs.  Charlotte knows they need to play the best soccer of their season and will play like a team on fire in their remaining games.

Los Angeles Blues finds themselves in 8th place after earning 26 points from 20 games.  The Blues play all their remaining matches at home in a couple of two games in three nights series.  Antigua comes to California to play on August 9 and 11 before Los Angeles hosts Harrisburg on August 17 and 19.  If they win 3 out of their 4 games left in the regular season, the Blues will jump safely into the playoff spots.  Antigua hasn’t won a game away from home all season, 0-9-1 on the road, so Los Angeles should be able to get 6 points from those two games.  It will be important for Harrisburg to finish the regular season in good form so those two matches will be much harder for the Blues.

Dayton Dutch Lions have been eliminated from the 2012 USL-Pro playoffs.  Dayton needs at least 11 points to take 8th place but there are only 9 points possible from their remaining three games.  Dayton fans should take solace knowing that in 21 games this season, the Dutch Lions have doubled their wins total and in their last few games have the chance to double their points haul from last year.  In 2013, Dayton will hope to continue their improving trajectory towards their first ever USL-Pro playoff appearance.

Pittsburgh Riverhounds are sitting on the outside at this point in the season.  The Riverhounds played some encouraging soccer at times this year and I hope the fanbase will swell upon completion of their new facilities in 2013.  Unfortunately the team has allowed 35 goals for a -15 goal differential at this point in the 2012 season.

Something we’ve known for a rather long time is that Antigua Barracuda FC will not be participating in the 2012 USL-Pro playoffs.  With only 3 wins from 20 games so far this season, the Caribbean team can not muster enough points from their remaining four games to make the 6 team cut.  But it’s not all doom and gloom down on the islands, as their membership in the league was part of a plan to increase the performance of the Antiguan-Barbudan national team.  As you may remember, the national side has made it to the Third Round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying for the first time in history.  Even though the league results have not gone their way (due not in small part to travel and scheduling nightmares), don’t expect Antigua Barracuda FC to bow out of the USL-Pro.

Only four teams in USL-Pro know the result of their playoff hopes at this point in the season.  Antigua Barracuda FC, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, and Dayton Dutch Lions are all eliminated from the playoffs while Orlando City has know for quite awhile that it has made the postseason.  All of the other seven teams in the league are fighting for the remaining 5 playoff spots.  Mathematically, any of these seven teams can finish in second place but I would look for Rochester or Charleston to wrap up the first round playoff bye.

The cliche is shockingly accurate in the case of the 2012 USL-Pro season; it’s all to play for…

Rhinos Looked Weak Against Spirited Dayton

J.C. Banks added another assist to his season and career totals (8 and 13, respectively) by playing a ball into Danny Earls who finished far side in the third minute.  Isaac Kissi sealed the game when he coolly finished off a feed from Andrew Hoxie that beat the high offside trap in the last minute of regulation.  The interceding 86+ minutes were often not worth watching.  Rochester got the three points they needed but the game should have been much more comfortable.

In the match preview I noted that Dayton has rarely been knocked out of games this season.  The team hangs around even after going down a goal on the road.  I noted, along with several other observers at the game, that Dayton was only ever one pass or one touch away from getting into dangerous scoring opportunities.  There were a couple occasions when Dayton forwards were through on goal but Kristian Nicht made himself big and blocked the chance. Rochester Rhinos v Dayton Dutch Lions Match Preview

Dayton Dutch Lions will travel to Sahlen’s Stadium to face off against the Rhinos for their last regular season meeting on Saturday.  In the time since these two teams last met on May 26, a 2-2- draw in Ohio, Rochester and Dayton have had identical records:2 wins, 3 losses, 2 ties.  Rochester needs this game to solidify their position at the top of the standings before a difficult road trip next week.  Dayton needs to steal a result in Rochester to gather momentum for a playoff push.

It may be inaccurate to call Dayton Dutch Lions a resurgent soccer club because, despite their abysmal record, they haven’t really been as down and out as many observers thought.  They’ve only lost 2 games by more than a one goal margin this season.  One could easily say that the team has been in every game this year and was only blown out once (4-0 loss away to Harrisburg).  They’ve recently beaten a strong Wilmington side 4-0 at home so Dayton could finally have righted the ship.

I asked “chadholl” who moderates the r/DDLFC and contributes to r/MLS about the players to watch and story lines about the team coming into Saturday’s match.

“The biggest thing that has changed since the Rhinos and Dutch Lions last met is that the Dutch Lions have gained some confidence.  We upset the Columbus Crew in route to a quarter-final appearance in the USOC.  We are 2-1-0 since the midpoint of the season.  There have been signs of individual talent all season, but now the team is learning how to play together as a team.  Chemistry is finally developing.

We’re getting much better distribution from midfield, especially from Joel DeLass.  Both forwards, Gibson Bardsley and Eli Garner, are real threats to score and aren’t shy about taking shots (Bardsley leads the league in this category).  Akeem Priestly, who has scored two goals in the last two matches, provides creativity off the bench.  The defense is anchored by Nixon Dias and Mettin Copier, two solid centerbacks from Holland.  Matt Williams is a stud in the net.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see him playing in a higher league in the near future.

The Dutch Lions will be looking to continue the run they’ve started in the second half of the season. Several of the players are talking about making the playoffs, but they’re going to need victories on the road against good teams to get there. Additionally, this is the final time that these teams will meet in the regular season this year, and Dayton will be looking to even the season series at 1-2-1. Rochester’s victory over Dayton on April 28 resulted from a goal on a questionable non-call from the referee. The draw on May 26 ended with a Rochester goal very late in injury time. The Lions will be hungry for a win at Sahlen’s Stadium.”

Despite a thorough defeat at the hands of Sporting Kansas City in the U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal on June 26, Dayton may finally have found the winning combination on the field.  It may not appear much at face value, but Dayton’s victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday (while the Rhinos dismantled Antigua) lifted the Dutch Lions from the league’s basement and potentially within reach of the playoffs.

The Dutch Lions have trotted out mostly the same starting XI all season and have stayed true to their 4-3-3 philosophy.  Saturday’s lineup will look a lot like this:

GK: Matt Williams
D: Mettin Copier, Nixon Dias, Gregory Preciado, Shane Smith
M: Joel DeLass, Kyle Knotek, Mikael McNamara
F: Gibson Bardsley, Eli Garner, Gerrit Jan Bartels
Reserves: M Bret Jones, Eric Kissinger, Toric Robinson; D Lord Taylor; F Akeem Priestly, Daniel Holowaty; GK Corey Whisenhunt.

The following Dayton players have gotten on the scoresheet this season:
Thomas “Eli” Garner: 3 goals, 2 assists, 15 shots

Gibson Bardsley: 3 goals, 1 assist, 35 shots
Akeem Priestley: 2 goals, 15 shots
Mettin Copier: 2 goals
Joel DeLass: 1 goal, 1 assist
Gerrit Jan Bartels: 3 assists, tied for 5th in league
Eric Kissinger: 1 goal
Kyle Knotek, Mikael McNamara, Shane Smith: 1 assist each

For the Rhinos, you don’t get a much easier week than the bottom two teams in the league at home.  And that’s good news for the team because next week Rochester has to travel to both fourth placed Wilmington on Thursday and league leading Orlando on Saturday.  Wednesday night the Rhinos felt the relief of a big win in a fairly open game.  During halftime of their game against Pittsburgh, Dutch Lions head coach Ivar van Dinteren “told the guys to open up the game,” and that’s how they found success with their 4-3-3 formation.  If Dayton’s match mimics the back and forth nature from Wednesday, Rochester could get punished. Dayton’s forward three have shown dynamism in bursts this season and certainly will not be afraid to pepper shots on Kristian Nicht.  I can’t promise 4 goals from the home team, but the game should be thoroughly entertaining from two teams that can get numbers forward.

Rhinos Squeak by Dayton to Finish Their Road Trip A Perfect 3-0

The Rhinos took advantage of a defensive blunder by the Dayton Dutch Lions to steal three points in a drab and dreary USL-Pro match on Saturday night.  Neither team really deserved to win this match, but J.C. Banks was on hand to capitalize on a truly dreadful back pass debacle.

The Rhinos started Kristian Nicht in goal; Quavas Kirk, George Kyriazis, Troy Roberts, and Jack Traynor in the back; Danny Earls on the right, J.C. Banks out left, Drew Cost and Tyler Rosenlund in the middle; with Tam McManus playing behind Graciano Brito.

The Dayton Dutch Lions ran out the same lineup they used in their previous two league matches. Matthew Williams; Gregory Preciado, Nixon Dias, Mettin Copier, and Shane Smith; Joel DeLass, Mikael McNamara, and Kyle Knotek; Gibson Bardsley, Gerrit-Jan Bartels, and Akeem Priestley.

In the first half, the Rhinos seemed to struggle with the advanced wing-play from Dayton’s wide forwards Gibson Bardsley and Akeem Priestley.  Rochester seemed content to sit back, soak up pressure and exploit counter attacks.  However, no counter attacks were forthcoming and the Dutch Lions could not put together a final ball.  In fact, both teams were spraying sloppy passes and slicing shots well wide of the goal in the first 45 minutes.  The referee’s whistle came as a relief for the spectators much more so than for the players of either side. Rochester Rhinos at Dayton Dutch Lions: Match Preview

The starting lineup for both of Dayton’s previous two USL-Pro matches this year has been:
Defenders: Mettin Copier, Nixon Dias, Gregory Preciado, and Shane Smith
Midfielders: Joel DeLass, Kyle Knotek, and Mikael McNamara
Forwards: Gibson Bardsley, Gerrit-Jan Bartels, and Akeem Priestley
Goalkeeper: Matthew Williams

Midfielders Bret Jones and Eric Kissinger played significant minutes in the second half against Charlotte, while forwards Daniel Holowaty and Eli Garner both played a role against Pittsburgh last week.  I think the Dutch Lions will probably use many of these same players and may even repeat the starting XI against the Rhinos.

Shane Smith is a 26 year old second year professional who previously played in the Professional Arena Soccer League.  Daniel Holowaty is a 6’0″ Buffalo native and 2011 Rochester Institute of Technology graduate.  Joel DeLass, 25, previously played with the Charlotte Eagles in 2010.  In his first professional season, Eric Kissinger ended the 2011 Dutch Lions campaign with 4 goals in 17 appearances.  Mettin Copier is a former Austrian youth international who trained in the AZ Alkmaar development structure before gaining experience in the Dutch second division (Eerste).  Mikael McNamara is a SUNY Albany graduate who debuted professionally against the Rhinos last season.  31 year old Bret Jones is an Ohio soccer veteran, making the Dutch Lions his fifth Ohio-based club.  Gibson Bardsley is a young forward from Washington State who made two appearances for the Charlotte Eagles last season.  Matt Williams spent 2011 with the Wilmington Hammerheads but didn’t make his professional debut until this month with the Dutch Lions.  Akeem Priestley played last year with the L.A. Blues and is a part of the Jamaican national team set up. Continue reading
